01 The story, in three paragraphs

Why everyone keeps coming back.

French Roast, nestled on the Upper West Side of New York City at 2340 Broadway, delivers a charming taste of France with its authentic French restaurant and coffee shop ambiance. This delightful spot masterfully blends classic brasserie charm with a cozy neighborhood vibe, making it an ideal destination for both casual coffees and indulgent meals.

The menu at French Roast is a celebration of traditional French flavors with a contemporary twist. Start your culinary journey with irresistible hors d'oeuvres such as the Escargot en Croute, enveloped in buttery puff pastry with a touch of Pernod and provençal butter, or delight in the Burrata Tartelette, where creamy burrata meets the sweetness of grilled peaches drizzled with balsamic glaze. Vegetarians will appreciate options like the Zucchini Noodles tossed in basil pesto and topped with shaved almonds and parmesan, offering fresh, vibrant notes.

For the main course, French Roast shines with classic French dishes elevated to perfection. The Croque Monsieur – a Parisian ham sandwich layered with melty Gruyère and velvety béchamel sauce – epitomizes comfort food with elegance. The Smoked Salmon Hash combines savory roasted potatoes, perfectly poached eggs, and a luxurious lobster sauce, delivering layers of rich, satisfying flavor. Lighter eaters will find joy in the Veggie Burger, made from organic grains and served with sweet potato fries, a fresh and hearty alternative.

Breakfast and brunch enthusiasts will appreciate the versatility of the Omelette Station, where you can customize a fluffy three-egg omelette with choices ranging from sharp cheddar and creamy brie to fresh vegetables like spinach, tomato, and avocado. The food is thoughtfully prepared to please the palate while maintaining a relaxed, welcoming pace.

Guests consistently praise the attentive and friendly service at French Roast. Whether you're greeted warmly upon arrival or attended to with care throughout your meal, the staff’s genuine hospitality enhances the overall experience. While the restaurant exudes an intimate, European bistro feel, the lively but not overwhelming ambiance, complemented by outdoor seating options, invites leisurely conversations and comfortable gatherings alike.

Some patrons have noted minor details such as window seating feeling a bit chilly on windy days, but this is easily outweighed by the warm, inviting atmosphere and exquisite dishes that keep diners coming back. Classic favorites like the French onion soup and croque madames regularly receive high marks for their comforting, expertly crafted taste.

Whether seeking a cozy spot for a relaxed Sunday morning brunch, a charming destination for a casual dinner with friends, or a pleasant place to sip a quality café au lait while savoring a freshly baked pastry, French Roast stands out as a true gem on Broadway. It captures the essence of French dining culture with a modern New York flair, leaving guests with warm memories and satisfied appetites.

For reservations or inquiries, call +1 212-799-1533 and prepare to indulge in the flavors and charm of French Roast, a little slice of Paris in the heart of the Upper West Side.

Food was ok (home fries were not warm) but plates were warm. Staff were very attentive and friendly. It was a windy day so the window seats were a bit cold. If you can, stay away from the window seatings

French Roast is an underground must-visit restaurant! Food: Get the Pan Roasted Yellowfish Tuna (pictured)! For dessert, I highly enjoyed the mango cheesecake and brownie a la mode (both pictured). Experience: I was warmly greeted by hostess Sheerin and evening manager Betsy at the door! My reservation for 5 was super easy to place, and all table service was speedy and enjoyable thanks to our server, Adam. He made sure allergens were accounted for, and recommended our plates to us! Great start to the new year.

4.4/5 rounded down. We are eating smaller portions so thought the Happy Hour menu was perfect for us. We got moules mariniere (mussels in wine sauce), pommes farcies (potato skins), chicken liver pate and truffle fries. All good and well proportion & for $8 each. Complementary delicious bread served with our food. Discounted beer and wine. Atmosphere is lively without being too noisy. Outdoor seating. June 2025

Came her for Saturday brunch with some friends. The restaurant is styled as a classic French brasserie and had lots of outdoor seating. The French onion soup and croque madames were perfection. We ate every last bite. Only negative was that one friend had an omelet that wasn’t cooked long enough for the cheese to melt. Overall, the food was delicious. Our server was attentive and friendly. Will definitely be going back to try more!

Such a feel good place. We also had the nicest waitress, Maria Alejandra. She had the best energy and was so careful to make sure we got exactly what we ordered. Feels like a little European bistro tucked into the upper west side of New York. Perfect place to meet a friend, spend a rainy afternoon or a Sunday morning. Had such a nice time! Food came out fast and was lovely. Went back again and had the most sincere careful waiter David. He is the nicest person and we had a lovely brunch! Thank you David you are incredible and so warm and wonderful.

First I have to mention that the service was impeccable from the moment we walked in! Our server Lena took care of us and gave us recommendations! We came in for happy hour and started with a couple of drinks and small plates (mussels, potato skins, and cheese plate). All were excellent! We had Coq au Vin and Cassoulet as our entrees. They both hit the spot and provided a level of warmth on a cold autumn night! We cannot wait to return to try the rest of the menu with service so welcoming and outstanding!

French Roast is a delight for food, drink, and atmosphere. We Ate brunch at around 1030 AM. Everything was delicious! The Brioche French Toast was light and sweet and the fruit compote added the perfect amount of tart to the meal. The Shakshuka is delightful and full of spices! The Mezcla sausage tastes great, but be-warned it is spicy! The cappuccino was Great! The tight cozy feel with the vibration from the subway passing beneath gives this restaurant that NYC ambiance that’s second to none. Whether you’re a local or visiting Manhattan for the first time this is a great place to stop and eat!
